advocating for personal storytelling from underrepresented communities

ADVOCACY CAMPAIGNS

We advocate for personal storytelling from underrepresented communities in documentary film and nonfiction media. We believe that having media that expresses the breadth and depth of our experiences is critical to understanding ourselves as well as creating more cross-cultural understanding.

Survivor-Centered Filmmaking Practices

[CSRV guide]

Our interest in Survivor Centered Filmmaking Practices arose during our advoacy campaign to bring awareness to the unethical practices in the making of Sabaya, a film featuring Yazidi survivors of sexual enslavement. We continue to advocate against exploitative filmmaking and to bring best practices in working respectfully with survivors of sexual violence and abuse.

The Power of Personal Documentary Films

The Power of Personal Documentary Films summarizes the findings of focus groups and an online survey that inquired about the experiences of emerging documentary filmmakers of color in the industry. In particular, we looked at the impacts of white supremacy on filmmakers.
